Founded by Yves Jongen in 1986, IBA is as a spin-off of the Cyclotron Research Center of the Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve (UCL), Belgium.
Initially active in medical imaging, the company turned its attention to radiotherapy and developed cyclotrons and integrated proton therapy centers which are able to treat numerous forms of cancer with a degree of precision and efficacy never reached before.

IBA (Ion Beam Applications S.A.) is now the world leader in particle accelerator technology. The company is the leading supplier of equipment and services in the fields of proton therapy, considered to be the most advanced form of radiation therapy available today, industrial sterilization, radiopharmaceuticals and dosimetry. CRC (Cyclotron Resource Centre) is a technological platform of UCLouvain who provides ion beam from the cyclotron CYCLONE110 for applications. One of the activities developed by the CRC, in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) is the characterization of the behaviour of electronic devices under the bombardment of energetic particles.
The Heavy ion Irradiation Facility (HIF), the Light ion Irradiation Facility (LIF) and the Co-60 gamma irradiator are operated by CRC and are used by a large number of users coming from space agencies or from the space or aeronautics industries.
